DDS file format: what it is and how to use it
DirectDraw Surface is the game-ready texture container: GPU-compressed pixels with mipmaps already baked in, ready for the graphics card to consume. Learn when to use it and what to choose instead.

What is a DDS file?
A .dds file is a texture in the DirectDraw Surface container, Microsoft's format for GPU-ready images: compressed with block codecs (DXT1/DXT5, BC1–BC7), with the whole mipmap chain pre-generated inside. The graphics card reads the blocks directly with no CPU decode, which is why a generation of game engines shipped textures as .dds.
When should you use DDS?
- Game textures: GPU-compressed formats load faster and cost ~6× less VRAM.
- Prebuilt mipmaps: every mip level ships inside the file, ready for rendering.
- Modding older engines: countless PC games store their texture packs as .dds.
When is another format a better fit?
For editing and authoring use PNG or TGA, since DDS compression is lossy and baked. For modern engines, formats like KTX2/Basis or ASTC took over the GPU-ready role. And for anything outside graphics, such as web or documents, it simply does not belong.
The short version: DDS is a GPU-loading texture container: great inside a game, but wrong almost everywhere else.

DDS questions, answered
How do I open a .dds file?
GIMP, Paint.NET, NVIDIA's tools, game engines and texture viewers read it; stock OS viewers often do not. dexrr displays and converts dds files in your browser.
Can I convert DDS files online?
Yes, dexrr converts dds locally in your browser: DDS to PNG to edit textures or DDS to JPG for opaque previews.
Is DDS better than PNG?
For GPUs, yes, blocks upload directly and use less VRAM. For editing, no, BC compression is lossy. Author in PNG, ship in DDS (or KTX2).
Why does my converted DDS look blocky?
BC/DXT codecs compress in 4×4 blocks, fine for GPU use but visible on gradients and text. Re-export from the PNG master, not from a decoded DDS.
Is the DDS format outdated?
Inside game pipelines it is still common; as an interchange it is being succeeded by KTX2 and modern GPU texture standards.
