DSF file format: what it is and how to use it
DSF stores DSD audio, the 1-bit, 2.8 MHz stream from Super Audio CD, for the audiophile world where PCM is the wrong shape. Learn when to use it and what to choose instead.

What is a DSF file?
A .dsf file is audio in DSD Stream File, the container Sony and Philips created for Direct Stream Digital, the 1-bit, 2.8224 MHz sigma-delta stream behind Super Audio CD. DSF adds what a raw DSD bitstream lacks: ID3 metadata, album art and track structure. Files are huge and the format is deliberately niche: it exists to carry hi-res audio without converting to PCM.
When should you use DSF?
- SACD rips and DSD masters: keep the original 1-bit stream unchanged.
- DSD-native DAC playback: audiophile hardware that decodes DSD directly.
- Hi-res libraries with tags: the only mainstream container DSD audio gets.
When is another format a better fit?
For nearly everyone, FLAC at hi-res PCM plays everywhere at a fraction of the size. For editing, convert through WAV PCM anyway, since DSD cannot be edited natively. And for streaming or sharing, lossy AAC/MP3 remains the practical shape.
The short version: DSF is the audiophile's vault for DSD audio: right inside that niche, but wrong everywhere outside it.

DSF questions, answered
How do I open a .dsf file?
foobar2000 (with plugin), JRiver, Audirvana, VLC and FFmpeg-based players read it; stock players usually do not. dexrr plays and converts dsf files in your browser.
Can I convert DSF files online?
Yes, dexrr converts dsf locally in your browser: DSF to FLAC for hi-res PCM or DSF to WAV for editing.
Is DSD better than PCM/FLAC?
It is a different encoding, not objectively better. DSD excels for native playback on supporting DACs; hi-res FLAC is more practical and just as faithful.
Why are DSF files so big?
DSD trades bit depth for an extreme sample rate, and 1 bit × 2.8 MHz per channel adds up fast. Converting to FLAC shrinks them dramatically.
Is the DSF format outdated?
Niche but alive: the audiophile community keeps DSD downloads, and DSF remains its standard container.
