What is a ICNS file?
An .icns file is the Apple Icon Image format, a container of icon renditions at multiple sizes (16×16 through 1024×1024, including @2x Retina variants) that macOS uses for app bundles, Finder icons and document types. Each size lives as a separately encoded chunk inside, modern ones typically PNG-compressed, older ones legacy bitmap codecs.
When should you use ICNS?
- macOS app development: the required icon format inside
.appbundles. - DMG and document icons: Finder and the Dock read only .icns for these.
- Icon families: one file holding every resolution the OS may need.
When is another format a better fit?
For Windows targets use ICO, the same idea for a different OS. For the web, browsers want PNG or ICO favicons, not .icns. And for the artwork itself, keep a PNG or SVG master, since .icns is a packaging step, not an editing format.
The short version: ICNS is the macOS icon box, needed only when you ship something that Finder must show.

ICNS questions, answered
How do I open an .icns file?
macOS Preview and iconutil handle it natively; ImageMagick and GIMP read it too. dexrr displays and converts icns files directly in your browser.
Can I convert ICNS files online?
Yes, dexrr converts icns locally in your browser: ICNS to PNG to extract the artwork or PNG→ICNS to build an icon set.
Is ICNS better than ICO?
For macOS it is required; for Windows and the web, ICO is the equivalent. Neither is 'better', they serve different platforms.
Why does my .icns have ten images inside?
Each size and density variant (16, 32, 128, 256, 512, 1024 plus @2x) is stored separately so the OS picks the sharpest one. That is the point of the container.
Is the ICNS format outdated?
No, it remains the required icon format for macOS apps and is updated alongside Retina resolutions.
