What is a ODS file?
An .ods file is a workbook in OpenDocument Spreadsheet, the spreadsheet member of the ODF family (ISO/IEC 26300): a ZIP package of XML holding sheets, cells, formulas, styles and charts. Native to LibreOffice Calc and the open-standard counterpart to Excel's XLSX, mandated by governments that refuse proprietary lock-in for public data.
When should you use ODS?
- ODF-mandated environments: public-sector and standards-driven shops.
- LibreOffice/OpenOffice work: the fully native editable format.
- Long-term, vendor-free storage: a documented spec, independent of any vendor.
When is another format a better fit?
For the Excel-centric world use XLSX, since ODS opens in Excel but fidelity drifts on complex features. For raw data exchange CSV beats both on simplicity. And for fixed delivery, PDF.
The short version: ODS is the open-standard spreadsheet: Calc's native tongue and the ISO answer to XLSX.

ODS questions, answered
How do I open an .ods file?
LibreOffice Calc, Excel, Google Sheets and OpenOffice open it. dexrr displays and converts ods files directly in your browser.
Can I convert ODS files online?
Yes, dexrr converts ods locally in your browser: ODS to XLSX for Excel users, ODS to CSV for data or ODS to PDF for printing.
Is ODS better than XLSX?
Functionally they are peers: ODS is the open ISO standard, XLSX is the market-dominant one. Choose by your ecosystem, not the format.
Why did my ODS lose formatting in Excel?
Feature sets differ, so charts, conditional formats and functions do not always map one-to-one. Keep a copy in ODS and export PDF for appearance.
Is the ODS format outdated?
No, it is the maintained ISO spreadsheet standard and the default of LibreOffice and OpenOffice.
