What is a PPM file?

A .ppm file is a color image in Portable Pixmap, the Netpbm family's RGB member: a header (P3 ASCII or P6 raw binary), max value, then uncompressed red-green-blue triplets per pixel. It is the simplest color-image format that exists, which is why it is the first one students write and the last one production wants.

When should you use PPM?

  • Learning image I/O: the classic 'write a renderer' output format.
  • Unix image pipes: what Netpbm tools pass between each other.
  • Pixel-exact test images: no compression to debug, just RGB.

When is another format a better fit?

For grayscale use PGM; for real images always PNG: same pixels, compressed and universally readable. For HDR use PFM or EXR. PPM is a teaching and pipeline format, never a delivery one.

How do I open a .ppm file?

Can I convert PPM files online?

Is PPM better than PNG?

For a format you can implement in 20 lines, yes, that is its purpose. For storing or sharing, PNG wins by an order of magnitude.

What is the difference between P3 and P6?

The magic number. P3 stores RGB values as ASCII numbers, P6 as raw binary bytes. Identical image, different encoding.

Is the PPM format outdated?
