What is a TTC file?
A .ttc file is a TrueType Collection: several related fonts packed into one container, sharing the tables they have in common. A family like 'Arial' or 'Cambria' can ship regular, bold and italic variants in a single .ttc while deduplicating glyph data. It is how operating systems distribute font families efficiently.
When should you use TTC?
- System font families: how Windows and macOS ship multi-style fonts.
- Shared-table efficiency: closely related fonts that would repeat data as separate files.
- CJK fonts: large glyph sets where deduplication actually saves megabytes.
When is another format a better fit?
For a single font, TTF or OTF is simpler and more universally expected, since many tools want one face per file. For web delivery, extract to WOFF2; for distribution to others, split into the individual fonts first.
The short version: TTC is the font-family box: efficient for systems, but awkward for tools that want one font per file.

TTC questions, answered
How do I open a .ttc file?
Windows and macOS install it directly; font editors and fonttools can inspect and split it. dexrr displays and converts ttc files directly in your browser.
Can I convert TTC files online?
Yes, dexrr converts ttc locally in your browser: extract individual faces to otf or ttf, or package them for the web.
Is TTC better than TTF?
For families it is more efficient, since shared tables save space. For a single font, TTF/OTF is simpler and more compatible with tools that expect one face per file.
Why does my app not recognize the .ttc font?
Some tools only read single-face files. Extract the face you need to .ttf or .otf and install that instead.
Is the TTC format outdated?
No, it remains how operating systems ship font families, especially for CJK where shared tables save real space.
