ZIP file format: what it is and how to use it

ZIP is the archive format everyone knows: compressed bundles that open natively on every OS since Windows added it, still the default for sharing files. Learn when to use it and what to choose instead.

What is a ZIP file?

A .zip file is a bundle in the ZIP archive format, Phil Katz's 1989 PKZIP design: a directory of entries, each compressed (usually DEFLATE), with a central catalog at the end so tools can list contents without reading everything. It is the format Windows, macOS and phones open natively, the archive that needs no explanation to anyone.

When should you use ZIP?

  • Sharing with humans: the archive every recipient can open, no installs required.
  • Cross-platform bundles: from email attachments to app packaging (APKs and .jar are ZIPs inside).
  • Reasonable compression: not the best ratio, always a safe one.

When is another format a better fit?

For maximum compression 7z wins by a clear margin. For Unix trees with permissions tar.zst; for encryption AES-ZIP works but 7z does it stronger. ZIP's value is ubiquity, not superiority.

The short version: ZIP is the archive everyone can open: default choice for sharing. Trade it for 7z when size matters.

ZIP questions, answered

How do I open a .zip file?

Every OS opens it natively: Explorer, Finder, Files on phones, plus 7-Zip and all archive tools. dexrr lists and extracts zip archives directly in your browser.

Can I convert ZIP files online?

Yes, dexrr repacks zip archives locally in your browser to 7z or other formats, no upload needed.

Is ZIP better than 7z?

For compatibility, yes, it opens everywhere natively. For compression, 7z wins clearly. Share as ZIP, store as 7z is the common pattern.

Is ZIP encryption secure?

Legacy ZipCrypto is weak and broken; AES-encrypted ZIPs are stronger but support varies. 7z's AES-256 is the safer bet for real protection.

Is the ZIP format outdated?

35 years old and completely current. It remains the default archive humans exchange, embedded inside formats from APK to DOCX.
