What is a DNG file?
A .dng file is a RAW image in Digital Negative, Adobe's open, documented container for unprocessed sensor data, built on TIFF/EP and launched in 2004 to solve a real problem: every camera maker ships a different proprietary RAW that may one day be unreadable. DNG stores the raw mosaic (or linearized data), full metadata, and can even embed the original proprietary file inside itself.
When should you use DNG?
- Archiving RAW captures: an open spec that tools will read decades from now.
- Cameras writing DNG natively: Pentax, Leica, smartphones and drones already emit it.
- Vendor-neutral workflows: convert ARW/NEF/CR3 once, edit anywhere forever.
When is another format a better fit?
Keeping the native RAW preserves every vendor-private note your camera wrote. For developed delivery you need JPG or TIFF anyway, since DNG is a source, not a product. And some editors still handle specific DNG flavors better than others.
The short version: DNG is the insurance policy for RAW files. Convert your archives to it, and keep shooting whatever your camera makes.

DNG questions, answered
How do I open a .dng file?
Lightroom, Photoshop (ACR), Capture One, darktable and most RAW tools open it natively. dexrr displays and converts dng files directly in your browser.
Can I convert DNG files online?
Yes, dexrr converts dng locally in your browser to jpg, png or tiff for sharing and editing.
Is DNG better than keeping my camera's RAW?
For archiving, yes, because it is documented and vendor-neutral. The trade-off: some camera-specific metadata notes may not survive translation perfectly.
Does converting to DNG lose quality?
No, it stores the same sensor data, optionally even embedding the original raw file inside. Quality is preserved bit-for-bit.
Is the DNG format outdated?
No, it remains the only widely adopted open RAW container, still written natively by cameras and phones.
