What is a NEF file?

A .nef file is the RAW capture of a Nikon camera, Nikon Electronic Format: unprocessed Bayer sensor data, full EXIF and camera settings, in a TIFF-derived structure that has evolved across generations of bodies. Like all RAW, the image has not been developed, so white balance, exposure and tone are still decisions, not facts.

When should you use NEF?

  • Editing headroom: pull back highlights and lift shadows a JPEG already lost.
  • Archival masters: the sensor's original record for re-editing later.
  • Consistent processing: your own RAW workflow instead of in-camera JPEG.

When is another format a better fit?

For vendor-neutral long-term storage, DNG documents the same data openly. For delivery, a developed JPG is what anyone can view; for retouch hand-off TIFF. NEF is the negative, not the print.

The short version: NEF is Nikon's digital negative: edit from it, archive it, and publish something rendered.

How do I open a .nef file?

Lightroom, Capture One, Nikon's NX Studio, darktable and RAW viewers open it, though newest bodies may need updates. dexrr displays and converts nef files in your browser.

Is NEF better than DNG?
