What is a DOCX file?

A .docx file is a document in Office Open XML, the format Microsoft introduced with Word 2007 and standardized as ISO/IEC 29500: a ZIP package of XML parts holding the text, styles, numbering, comments, tracked changes and embedded media. It replaced the binary .doc with something smaller, more repairable and inspectable, and became the planet's default editable document.

When should you use DOCX?

  • Collaborative editing: tracked changes and comments are the currency of office work.
  • Contracts and reports: the file everyone expects to receive and can actually edit.
  • Structured documents: styles, TOC, headers and references in one portable package.

When is another format a better fit?

For final distribution use PDF, the frozen page nobody accidentally edits. For open-standard environments ODT is the ISO sibling; for simple portability RTF or even TXT. And never send a .docx when you mean 'read-only'.

The short version: DOCX is the world's editable document. Write and collaborate in it, but ship a PDF when the words are final.

DOCX questions, answered

How do I open a .docx file?

Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice Writer, Pages and virtually every office suite opens it. dexrr displays and converts docx files directly in your browser.

Can I convert DOCX files online?

Yes, dexrr converts docx locally in your browser: DOCX to PDF for sharing, DOCX to ODT for open formats or DOCX to TXT for raw text.

Is DOCX better than PDF?

For editing, yes. PDF is deliberately hard to change. For final distribution, PDF wins because the layout cannot shift. They are complements, not rivals.

Can a .docx file carry a virus?

It can carry macros (though .docx itself blocks them; that is .docm), embedded objects and malicious links. Treat unexpected attachments with the usual caution.

Is the DOCX format outdated?

No, it is the entrenched standard for editable documents across business, government and education.
