What is a ODT file?

An .odt file is a document in OpenDocument Text, the flagship member of the ODF family (ISO/IEC 26300): a ZIP of XML parts for content, styles, metadata and embedded objects, natively written by LibreOffice and OpenOffice Writer. It is the fully open, vendor-neutral editable document, adopted by governments precisely because no company controls it.

When should you use ODT?

  • ODF-standard environments: public sector, EU institutions, open-policy shops.
  • LibreOffice/OpenOffice workflows: the format these suites were built around.
  • Vendor-neutral archiving: a documented ISO spec that will outlive any vendor.

When is another format a better fit?

For the Word-centric world, DOCX is what people actually expect, since ODT opens in Word but complex formatting can shift. For final distribution use PDF; for simple exchange RTF.

The short version: ODT is the open-standard document: Writer's native format and the documented ISO answer to DOCX.

ODT questions, answered

How do I open an .odt file?

LibreOffice Writer, OpenOffice, Word, Google Docs and most office tools open it. dexrr displays and converts odt files directly in your browser.

Can I convert ODT files online?

Yes, dexrr converts odt locally in your browser: ODT to DOCX for Word users, ODT to PDF for sharing or ODT to TXT for plain text.

Is ODT better than DOCX?

As an open, vendor-free ISO standard, arguably. In adoption, DOCX dwarfs it. Inside open-source office suites, ODT is the correct native choice.

Why does my ODT look different in Word?

Layout engines differ, so fields, fonts and spacing translate imperfectly between ODF and OOXML. Export PDF when appearance must not shift.

Is the ODT format outdated?

No, it is the maintained ISO document standard, mandated in public-sector deployments worldwide.
