What is a EPS file?

An .eps file is a graphic in Encapsulated PostScript, a constrained PostScript program describing a single page of vector artwork, made to be embedded inside other documents. From the late 1980s it was the interchange of the print world: logos, clip-art and illustrations moved between Illustrator, FreeHand and layout software as .eps. It carries no pixels unless embedded, just drawing instructions.

When should you use EPS?

  • Legacy print workflows: some print shops and RIPs still ask for it.
  • Old asset libraries: stock-vector archives from the 90s/2000s ship .eps.
  • PostScript pipelines: direct-to-plate systems built around the language.

When is another format a better fit?

For everything modern, PDF is its own superset: vectors plus fonts, viewable everywhere. For the web and editing, SVG is the live standard. And for rasterized output, export PNG at the needed resolution. EPS today is a format you read more than you write.

The short version: EPS is print's vector ancestor. Convert it to SVG or PDF and keep the artwork without the archaeology.

EPS questions, answered

How do I open an .eps file?

Illustrator, Inkscape, Ghostscript/GSview and Affinity open it; previews depend on an embedded thumbnail. dexrr displays and converts eps files in your browser.

Can I convert EPS files online?

Yes, dexrr converts eps locally in your browser: EPS to SVG for editing, EPS to PDF for print or EPS to PNG for raster output.

Is EPS better than SVG?

For 1995, yes. Today SVG does the same job as an open web standard with live editing. EPS survives in print pipelines and old asset libraries.

Why won't my EPS open in Photoshop?

Photoshop rasterizes EPS on open. That is normal, since it is not a vector editor. Use Illustrator or Inkscape to keep the paths editable.

Is the EPS format outdated?

Yes for new work, since PDF and SVG replaced it, though it remains required by some print shops and stock archives.
