What is a PS file?
A .ps file is a document written in PostScript, Adobe's 1984 page description language: not data but a stack-based program a printer or interpreter executes to render vector graphics, text and images. It powered the desktop-publishing revolution and is the direct ancestor of PDF, which is PostScript tamed into a document format.
When should you use PS?
- Direct-to-printer pipelines: PostScript-capable printers still consume it natively.
- Legacy scientific graphics: decades of LaTeX-era figures were published as .ps/.eps.
- Ghostscript workflows: the format the interpreter ecosystem speaks.
When is another format a better fit?
For documents, PDF, its own descendant, is the answer on every axis: portable, viewable, secure. For vector graphics SVG; for embedded single-page figures the encapsulated variant EPS. PS today is infrastructure you encounter more than choose.
The short version: PS is the printer's programming language: historically foundational, but functionally replaced by PDF.

PS questions, answered
How do I open a .ps file?
Ghostscript, Acrobat Distiller and PostScript printers render it; browsers do not. dexrr displays and converts ps files directly in your browser.
Can I convert PS files online?
Is PS better than PDF?
For driving a PostScript printer it is the raw material; for everything else PDF, literally PostScript's portable descendant, is better.
What is the difference between .ps and .eps?
EPS is PostScript constrained to a single page with bounding-box rules so it can embed inside other documents; plain .ps is a full print job.
Is the PS format outdated?
As a document format yes, PDF won in the 90s. As printer infrastructure it still lives inside the print pipeline.
