GIF file format: what it is and how to use it
GIF is the 1987 CompuServe image format that refuses to die: 256 colors, on/off transparency, and the animation that made it a language of the internet. Learn when to use it and what to choose instead.

What is a GIF file?
A .gif file is an image in the Graphics Interchange Format, CompuServe's 1987 spec: LZW-compressed indexed pixels limited to 256 colors per frame, binary on/off transparency, and the frame-sequence animation that made it internet folklore. The LZW patent panic of the 1990s is what spawned PNG in the first place, yet GIF outlived the patents and the outrage.
When should you use GIF?
- Universal animation: the one moving image that plays literally everywhere, from chat apps and forums to old browsers.
- Tiny palette art: pixel art and simple loops where 256 colors suffice.
- Cultural shorthand: the reaction-image currency that needs no player.
When is another format a better fit?
For still images PNG beats it on every metric: more colors, real alpha, smaller files. For animation WebP/AVIF or real MP4 video deliver smooth color at a fraction of the size. GIF survives on compatibility and culture, not on merit.
The short version: GIF is the legacy animation that everything can play. Send it when compatibility beats quality.

GIF questions, answered
How do I open a .gif file?
Every browser, OS and messaging app on Earth plays it. dexrr displays, splits and converts gif files directly in your browser.
Can I convert GIF files online?
Yes, dexrr converts gif locally in your browser: GIF to WebP or GIF to MP4 for modern animation, GIF to PNG for stills.
Is GIF better than PNG?
For stills, never. PNG has more colors, real transparency and better compression. For simple animation, GIF's universality is its last advantage.
Why does my GIF look grainy or banded?
256 colors per frame is the hard limit, and dithering tries to hide it. For photographic loops use WebP or video instead.
Is the GIF format outdated?
Technically yes, with 1987 limits throughout, but as cultural infrastructure for animated reactions it remains effectively unreplacable.
