What is a MP4 file?
An .mp4 file is media in the MPEG-4 Part 14 container, the standardized box structure (an evolution of QuickTime's atoms) holding video tracks (H.264, HEVC, AV1), audio (AAC, MP3), subtitles and metadata. It is the format behind streaming, phones, downloads and <video> tags, the closest thing video has to a universal language.
When should you use MP4?
- Delivery: the one video file that plays on every device and browser.
- Streaming: fragmented MP4 is the plumbing of HLS and DASH.
- Recording and sharing: what phones, cameras and apps emit by default.
When is another format a better fit?
For feature-rich archives with many audio and subtitle tracks, MKV holds more. For open-royalty-free web video WebM; for editing pipelines MOV/ProRes; for tiny animation loops often GIF-replacements like WebP. MP4 is the destination format, rarely the workshop.
The short version: MP4 is video's lingua franca: deliver in it, edit in something else, and archive in MKV if you need more tracks.

MP4 questions, answered
How do I open an .mp4 file?
Everything plays MP4: every OS, browser, phone, TV and console. dexrr plays and converts mp4 files directly in your browser.
Can I convert MP4 files online?
Yes, dexrr converts mp4 locally in your browser: MP4 to MKV for archives, MP4 to WEBM for open web or MP4 to MP3 to extract audio.
Is MP4 better than MKV?
For delivery, yes, universal playback. For archives with many tracks, MKV is more capable. Container choice is about the destination, not quality.
Why is my MP4 file so large?
Size comes from the codecs and bitrate inside, since the container is just the box. Re-encode with HEVC or AV1, or lower the bitrate, to shrink it.
Is the MP4 format outdated?
No, it is the entrenched standard for delivered video and the plumbing of every streaming service.
