What is a M4V file?

An .m4v file is a video in Apple's variant of the MPEG-4 container: byte-compatible with .mp4 but signaling Apple conventions: iTunes movie and TV downloads, optional FairPlay DRM, chapter markers and AC-3 audio tracks. Rename a DRM-free .m4v to .mp4 and it usually just plays, since the extension is metadata about intent.

When should you use M4V?

  • Apple-ecosystem video: the conventional extension for iTunes and Apple device playback.
  • Chaptered, tagged movies: the container iTunes-style metadata assumes.
  • HandBrake's traditional output: many encoders still emit .m4v by default.

When is another format a better fit?

For anything outside Apple, use MP4: identical inside, zero question marks. For open web video WebM is the royalty-free alternative; for a multi-track archive MKV carries more than MP4's box model allows.

The short version: M4V is MP4 wearing an Apple badge. Rename or convert to .mp4 when it leaves the orchard.
