What is a MOV file?
A .mov file is a movie in Apple's QuickTime container, the atom/structure format from 1991 whose design MPEG-4 later adopted almost wholesale: time-based tracks for video, audio, text and timecode, plus the edit lists and references production tools rely on. It remains the house format of Final Cut Pro, iPhone recordings and ProRes.
When should you use MOV?
- Apple production pipelines: Final Cut, iPhone capture, ProRes masters.
- Editing intermediates: mezzanine codecs (ProRes, DNx) live here.
- Professional delivery: post-production hand-offs that expect .mov.
When is another format a better fit?
For distribution and playback, MP4 is its own descendant: same structure, universal support. For multi-track archives MKV; for the open web WebM. MOV is a production format first, a delivery format second.
The short version: MOV is the professional's container: work in it, then ship an MP4.

MOV questions, answered
How do I open a .mov file?
QuickTime, VLC, iPhones and virtually every player opens it; ProRes variants may need a codec on Windows. dexrr plays and converts mov files directly in your browser.
Can I convert MOV files online?
Yes, dexrr converts mov locally in your browser: MOV to MP4 for universal playback or MOV to WEBM for the web.
Is MOV better than MP4?
For production, often, since ProRes and editing metadata live naturally there. For delivery, MP4 wins because everything plays it. Same bones, different jobs.
Why is my iPhone video a .mov?
iPhones record into QuickTime containers with H.264/HEVC inside, and converting to MP4 is usually just a container change, no quality lost.
Is the MOV format outdated?
The format is older than MP4 but fully alive. It is still the default of Apple's capture and pro-video ecosystem.
