HEIC file format: what it is and how to use it
HEIC is Apple's camera format: HEVC-compressed photos at half the JPEG size, great on an iPhone and awkward everywhere else. Learn when to use it and what to choose instead.

What is a HEIC file?
A .heic file is a photo in the High Efficiency Image Container, Apple's choice since iOS 11 (2017): HEIF packaging (ISO/IEC 23008-12, an MP4 sibling) holding frames compressed with the HEVC video codec. It halves JPEG's size at equal quality, and one file can also carry depth maps, bursts and Live Photo sequences.
When should you use HEIC?
- iPhone photography: the default, at half the storage of JPG for the same shot.
- Burst, depth and Live Photo: multi-frame content stays in one file.
- Inside the Apple ecosystem: iOS, macOS and iCloud handle it natively.
When is another format a better fit?
Everywhere else it is friction: browsers ignore it, Windows needs a codec, and upload forms reject it. Convert to JPG for sharing or PNG for editing. AVIF offers similar compression ambitions with open licensing and growing support.
The short version: HEIC is the efficient camera format trapped in Apple's garden. Shoot in it, but convert before it leaves the phone.

HEIC questions, answered
How do I open a .heic file?
iPhone, iPad and macOS open it natively; Windows needs the HEIF extension, and browsers largely ignore it. dexrr displays and converts heic files directly in your browser.
Can I convert HEIC files online?
Yes, dexrr converts heic locally in your browser: HEIC to JPG for sharing or HEIC to PNG for editing, the usual fix for iPhone photos on the web.
Is HEIC better than JPG?
On compression, clearly: roughly half the size at equal quality. On compatibility, clearly not, which is why conversion remains a daily chore.
Why won't Windows open my iPhone photos?
They are HEIC, so Microsoft's HEIF extension (paid or bundled) is required, or convert them to JPG/PNG first.
Is the HEIC format outdated?
No, it is Apple's current camera default; the friction is its ecosystem boundary, not its age.
