HEIF file format: what it is and how to use it

What is a HEIF file?
A .heif file is an image in the High Efficiency Image File container, ISO/IEC 23008-12, built on the same ISOBMFF box structure as MP4: items, properties and metadata that can hold HEVC frames (→ .heic, Apple's flavor), AV1 frames (→ .avif), thumbnails, depth maps and image sequences. The container is codec-agnostic; the extensions tell you what is actually inside.
When should you use HEIF?
- Understanding the family: .heic and .avif are dialects of it, so knowing the container explains both.
- Modern image pipelines: cameras and encoders that emit ISO-boxed images.
- Multi-image and metadata-rich storage: sequences and depth in one file.
When is another format a better fit?
Almost always a more concrete one: for sharing use JPG, for the modern web AVIF, for editing PNG. A bare .heif in the wild is usually just Apple's or an encoder's default extension. Treat it like the HEIC it probably is.
The short version: HEIF is the family name of modern ISO-boxed images. In practice you meet it as .heic or .avif.
How to open a HEIF file
On Windows
Double-click the file, or open it with Windows Photos (codec).
On macOS
Apple Photos opens HEIF files on macOS.
In your browser
Open HEIF files right in a browser tab or with the dexrr viewer. No install, no upload.

HEIF questions, answered
How do I open a .heif file?
Apple devices natively; elsewhere via libheif tools, ImageMagick or extensions. dexrr displays and converts heif files directly in your browser.
Can I convert HEIF files online?
Yes, dexrr converts heif locally in your browser to jpg or png, same as its HEIC sibling.
What is the difference between .heif and .heic?
.heif is the generic container extension; .heic specifically marks the HEVC-in-HEIF variant Apple uses. The bytes follow the same box structure.
Why does my tool say it cannot read .heif?
The container is fine, but the tool lacks the codec the file carries (usually HEVC or AV1). Convert it with a libheif-capable tool or dexrr.
Is the HEIF format outdated?
No, it is the current ISO container standard that modern image codecs build on.
