What is a HTML file?

An .html file is a document written in HyperText Markup Language, the standardized tag vocabulary (headings, paragraphs, links, tables, media) that browsers render into pages: text plus structure plus references to CSS and JavaScript. Created by Tim Berners-Lee in 1991, it is quite literally the file format of the web. The page you are reading is one.

When should you use HTML?

  • Web documents: the only format browsers render natively.
  • Self-contained reports: styled output that opens on any device with a browser.
  • Email templates and exports: structured rich text as portable markup.

When is another format a better fit?

For offline reading use PDF, a fixed layout that prints predictably. For e-books EPUB packages the same HTML properly; for editable documents DOCX. And for content that must survive as data, Markdown/JSON travel better than rendered markup.

The short version: HTML is the document format of the browser: perfect for the web. Export to PDF when the page needs to leave it.

HTML questions, answered

How do I open a .html file?

Double-click it. Every browser renders it; Notepad or any editor shows the source. dexrr displays and converts html files directly in your browser.

Can I convert HTML files online?

Yes, dexrr converts html locally in your browser: HTML to PDF for printing or HTML to TXT for plain text.

Is HTML better than PDF?

For anything interactive or responsive, yes. For documents that must look identical everywhere, especially printed, PDF wins. Different purposes.

Why does my .html file look unstyled?

Its CSS and images are usually external, so moved alone, the markup loses its styling. Look for a .mht single-file variant or embed the assets.

Is the HTML format outdated?

No, it is the living standard of the web, maintained by WHATWG and extended continuously.
