PNM file format: what it is and how to use it

What is a PNM file?
A .pnm file is an image in Portable Anymap, the umbrella extension for the Netpbm family: PBM (bitmap), PGM (graymap) or PPM (pixmap), distinguished by the magic number inside. It signals 'some Netpbm image' without saying which, used by tools that emit whichever variant their output happens to be.
When should you use PNM?
- Netpbm toolchains: when the family matters more than the specific member.
- Pipes between converters:
anytopnm/pnmto*treat them as one type. - Learning the family: the umbrella name is how the docs describe the group.
When is another format a better fit?
Name the actual member (.pbm, .pgm or .ppm) when the content type is known; tools prefer the specific extension. For real-world use, PNG again. PNM is a family name, not a target.
The short version: PNM is 'some Netpbm image'. Pick the specific extension, or PNG for the real world.

PNM questions, answered
How do I open a .pnm file?
Netpbm tools, ImageMagick, GIMP and FFmpeg read it. dexrr displays and converts pnm files directly in your browser.
Can I convert PNM files online?
Yes, dexrr converts pnm locally in your browser: PNM to PNG for normal use.
What is the difference between PNM and PPM?
PNM is the umbrella for all three Netpbm types; PPM is specifically the color (RGB) member. A .pnm file might actually contain PBM, PGM or PPM data.
Is PNM better than PNG?
For pipes and scripts its simplicity helps; for real images PNG is always the better format, compressed, universal and metadata-capable.
Is the PNM format outdated?
Stable and niche. The Netpbm family survives in Unix pipelines and teaching, not in modern imaging.
