What is a PPTX file?

A .pptx file is a presentation in PowerPoint's Office Open XML format, a ZIP of XML parts for slides, layouts, masters, themes, media and speaker notes, standardized as ISO/IEC 29500. It replaced the binary .ppt in 2007 and became the default file the world's meetings run on: editable, themeable and expected by every boardroom.

When should you use PPTX?

  • Business presentations: the format audiences and tools assume.
  • Collaborative decks: comments, tracked changes and shared editing.
  • Template-driven work: corporate masters and themes in one package.

When is another format a better fit?

For open-standard shops use ODP; for distributing a finished deck PDF exports are bulletproof; for the web, an exported slide image or HTML deck. PPTX is for making and presenting, not for archiving.

The short version: PPTX is the world's slide deck. Build and present in it, and export to PDF when the meeting is over.

PPTX questions, answered

How do I open a .pptx file?

PowerPoint, Google Slides, LibreOffice Impress and Keynote open it. dexrr displays and converts pptx files directly in your browser.

Can I convert PPTX files online?

Yes, dexrr converts pptx locally in your browser: PPTX to PDF for sharing or PPTX to ODP for open-standard suites.

Is PPTX better than ODP?

In the PowerPoint-centric world it is the expected format; as an open standard ODP is equivalent. Choose by ecosystem.

Why does my PPTX look wrong in Google Slides?

Fonts, effects and animations translate imperfectly. Export to PDF for a faithful view or keep it inside PowerPoint.

Is the PPTX format outdated?

No, it is the entrenched standard for presentations across business and education.
