What is a ODP file?
An .odp file is a slide deck in OpenDocument Presentation, the presentation member of the ISO/IEC 26300 ODF family: a ZIP of XML parts describing slides, layouts, masters, images and speaker notes. It is LibreOffice Impress's native format and the open-standard answer to PowerPoint's PPTX.
When should you use ODP?
- Open-standard environments: governments and organizations mandated on ODF.
- LibreOffice/OpenOffice workflows: the native editable format.
- Vendor independence: a documented spec anyone can implement.
When is another format a better fit?
For handing a deck to a PowerPoint world, PPTX is safer, since ODP opens there but layout fidelity can drift. For presenting without an editor PDF exports are bulletproof. ODP is the right choice inside its ecosystem, a conversion candidate outside it.
The short version: ODP is the open-standard slide deck: native in LibreOffice, convertible to PPTX or PDF for everyone else.

ODP questions, answered
How do I open an .odp file?
LibreOffice Impress, OpenOffice, Google Slides and even PowerPoint open it. dexrr displays and converts odp files directly in your browser.
Can I convert ODP files online?
Yes, dexrr converts odp locally in your browser: ODP to PPTX for PowerPoint users or ODP to PDF for sharing.
Is ODP better than PPTX?
As an open standard it is more future-proof; in practice, PPTX is what most of the world exchanges. Use ODP inside ODF shops, PPTX when compatibility rules.
Why does my ODP look different in PowerPoint?
Fonts, text metrics and feature support differ, so ODF features without OOXML equivalents degrade. Export a PDF for guaranteed appearance.
Is the ODP format outdated?
No, it is the maintained ISO presentation format, still the default of open-source office suites.
