What is a DXF file?
A .dxf file is a CAD drawing in Drawing Exchange Format, the ASCII (or binary) container Autodesk published so other software could read AutoCAD data: layers, line types, blocks, entities like lines, polylines, arcs, splines, hatches and dimensions as tagged group codes. It is verbose, sprawling and imperfect, and it is the interoperability contract of the entire CAD world.
When should you use DXF?
- CAD-to-CAD exchange: the one format every drafting, CAM and laser-cutting tool reads.
- Vector geometry hand-off: flat paths for CNC, plotters and sign-making.
- Reading legacy drawings: decades of engineering archives live in .dxf.
When is another format a better fit?
Inside the AutoCAD ecosystem, DWG is the richer native format. For web vector graphics use SVG; for 3D scenes use glTF or OBJ. DXF is fundamentally a drafting interchange, not a scene format.
The short version: DXF is CAD's universal handshake, the drawing format every tool accepts even when it accepts nothing else.

DXF questions, answered
How do I open a .dxf file?
AutoCAD, LibreCAD, FreeCAD, Inkscape, Fusion 360 and most CAD/vector tools import it. dexrr displays and converts dxf files directly in your browser.
Can I convert DXF files online?
Yes, dexrr converts dxf locally in your browser: DXF to SVG for the web or DXF to OBJ for mesh workflows.
Is DXF better than DWG?
For exchange, often. DWG is richer inside AutoCAD but its binary format is proprietary. DXF is documented and readable by almost everything.
Why does my imported DXF lose blocks or layers?
Translators vary in completeness, so exploded entities, missing linetypes and version mismatches are common. Try a different importer or an older DXF version.
Is the DXF format outdated?
It is old but indispensable, still the default interchange for CAD, CNC and fabrication workflows worldwide.
