OBJ file format: what it is and how to use it

OBJ is the plain-text 3D mesh format every tool on Earth can read: vertices, UVs, faces and a .mtl sidecar for materials. Learn when to use it and what to choose instead.

What is a OBJ file?

An .obj file is a 3D mesh in the Wavefront OBJ format: plain ASCII listing vertices v, texture coordinates vt, normals vn and faces f, optionally pointing at a .mtl file for materials. From Wavefront's 1980s tools it became the simplest possible lingua franca: no scene, no rig, no animation, just geometry every 3D program can read and write.

When should you use OBJ?

  • Mesh exchange: when you only need geometry and UVs, nothing else travels.
  • Maximum compatibility: the format even obscure tools implement.
  • Scan and retopo output: what photogrammetry and remeshing tools emit.

When is another format a better fit?

For scenes with rigs, animation or PBR materials, use glTF. For printing use STL or 3MF, since OBJ's materials are irrelevant there anyway. For legacy pipelines 3DS still appears. OBJ is geometry, period.

The short version: OBJ is the text file of 3D: vertices and faces, nothing more. Convert onward when the scene needs more.

OBJ questions, answered

How do I open a .obj file?

Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, MeshLab, Windows 3D Viewer and every 3D tool imports it. dexrr displays and converts obj files directly in your browser.

Can I convert OBJ files online?

Yes, dexrr converts obj locally in your browser: OBJ to glTF for modern pipelines, OBJ to STL for printing or OBJ to PLY for scans.

Is OBJ better than glTF?

For a bare mesh, OBJ is simpler, being text you can edit by hand. For scenes, materials and animation, glTF wins outright. Different scopes.

Why did my .obj import without materials?

Materials live in the separate .mtl file. If it did not travel with the .obj, or texture paths broke, the mesh arrives bare.

Is the OBJ format outdated?

As a scene format yes; as the universal bare-geometry handshake it is irreplaceable and everywhere.
