PLY file format: what it is and how to use it
PLY is the Polygon File Format: the flexible 3D geometry container behind decades of 3D scans and point clouds, with per-element attributes. Learn when to use it and what to choose instead.

What is a PLY file?
A .ply file is 3D data in the Polygon File Format, Stanford's early-90s design for scanned geometry: a header declaring elements (vertices, faces, edges) and their typed properties (positions, colors, normals, confidence), then the data as ASCII or binary. Its extensible property lists made it the favorite of 3D scanning and research, since point clouds with arbitrary per-vertex data fit naturally.
When should you use PLY?
- 3D scans and point clouds: the de-facto format of scanners, photogrammetry and research datasets.
- Attribute-rich geometry: per-vertex color, normals, quality, beyond what OBJ or STL express.
- Mesh processing pipelines: MeshLab, CloudCompare and academic tools speak it natively.
When is another format a better fit?
For delivery and web display use glTF; for printing STL or 3MF; for simple mesh exchange OBJ. PLY is the capture and research format, so convert onward when the data leaves the lab.
The short version: PLY is the scan-and-research geometry format: unmatched for attribute-heavy data, but wrong for end-user delivery.

PLY questions, answered
How do I open a .ply file?
MeshLab, CloudCompare, Blender and most 3D tools open it. dexrr displays and converts ply files directly in your browser.
Can I convert PLY files online?
Yes, dexrr converts ply locally in your browser: PLY to STL for printing, PLY to OBJ for mesh use or PLY to glTF for display.
Is PLY better than OBJ?
For scans and attribute-rich data, yes, it carries per-vertex properties OBJ cannot. For simple mesh exchange, OBJ is more universally expected.
Why did my PLY lose its colors when converted?
Vertex-color attributes do not survive every target, and STL ignores them entirely. Check what your target format supports before converting.
Is the PLY format outdated?
Stable and entrenched in its niche, still the standard output of 3D scanning and geometry research.
