What is a MP3 file?
An .mp3 file is audio compressed with MPEG-1/2 Layer III, the Fraunhofer psychoacoustic codec from 1993 that deletes the sound your ears cannot hear anyway: roughly a tenth of CD size with artifacts tuned to stay below perception. ID3 tags carry title, artist and artwork. Patents expired in 2017, and its real monopoly, universal playback, was never technical anyway.
When should you use MP3?
- Compatibility above all: if it must play on anything (car stereos, embedded chips, decade-old players), MP3 is the floor.
- Podcasts and voice: speech at modest bitrates is perfectly served.
- Handing music to strangers: zero questions asked, anywhere on Earth.
When is another format a better fit?
For quality-per-bit, AAC and Opus beat it measurably. For libraries and editing, lossy is the wrong tool, so use FLAC or WAV. And inside video, AAC in MP4 is the modern convention.
The short version: MP3 is audio's lowest common denominator: never the best choice technically, but always a safe one practically.

MP3 questions, answered
How do I open an .mp3 file?
Literally everything plays MP3: OSes, browsers, phones, cars, watches. dexrr plays and converts mp3 files directly in your browser.
Can I convert MP3 files online?
Yes, dexrr converts mp3 locally in your browser: MP3 to WAV for editing, MP3 to OGG or MP3 to FLAC for storage.
Is MP3 better than AAC?
No, AAC was designed as its successor and sounds better at the same bitrate. MP3's only advantage is the decades of hardware that assumes it.
Does converting WAV to MP3 lose quality?
Yes, permanently. At 256–320 kbps the loss is hard to hear, but it is gone. Keep a lossless master if the audio matters long-term.
Is the MP3 format outdated?
Technically surpassed by AAC and Opus, but 'outdated' undersells it: it remains the most universally playable audio format in existence.
