What is a OGG file?

An .ogg file is media in the Ogg container, Xiph.Org's open, patent-free multiplexing format that wraps codec streams: usually Vorbis audio (the classic .ogg), Opus, FLAC, or Theora/VP8 video. It is a container, not a codec, so the same .ogg extension can hide very different payloads, which is its greatest strength and its main source of confusion.

When should you use OGG?

  • Patent-free audio: Vorbis and Opus in the container games and open-source apps prefer.
  • Game sound effects: the de-facto format of engines avoiding MP3/AAC licensing.
  • Streaming open codecs: Ogg's design handles live streams well.

When is another format a better fit?

For universal playback, MP3 still opens on more hardware; for the web, AAC/M4A and WebM have better browser coverage. For lossless use FLAC directly (.flac, though Ogg-FLAC exists). Ogg's niche is openness, not reach.

The short version: OGG is the open container of the Xiph codec family, the free-software world's audio box.

OGG questions, answered

How do I open an .ogg file?

VLC, foobar2000, most browsers and game engines play it; older hardware players may not. dexrr plays and converts ogg files directly in your browser.

Can I convert OGG files online?

Yes, dexrr converts ogg locally in your browser: OGG to MP3 for compatibility or OGG to WAV for editing.

What is inside an .ogg file?

The container is codec-agnostic. Most .ogg files hold Vorbis or Opus audio, but Ogg can also wrap FLAC, Theora video or even Speex. The extension alone does not say.

Is OGG better than MP3?

The Vorbis inside typically beats MP3 at equal bitrate, and the whole stack is patent-free. MP3 still wins on raw compatibility.

Is the OGG format outdated?

No, it is maintained by Xiph.Org and remains the container of choice for open-codec audio in games and free software.
