What is a M4A file?

An .m4a file is an audio-only track in the MPEG-4 container, the same MP4 box structure as video, holding an audio stream: most commonly AAC, or ALAC for Apple's lossless files. Compared to a bare .aac stream it adds what a music file needs (proper tags, album art and chapter markers), which is why iTunes, Apple Music downloads and iPhone Voice Memos all speak .m4a.

When should you use M4A?

  • AAC done properly: lossy audio with real metadata, art and chapters.
  • Apple ecosystems: the native audio file of iTunes, iOS and macOS.
  • Podcasts and voice memos: the default capture format on iPhones.

When is another format a better fit?

For absolute compatibility with ancient players, MP3 still opens on everything. For lossless archives FLAC has wider support than ALAC-in-m4a outside Apple. And if you need the video too, that is MP4, the same container with pictures.

The short version: M4A is AAC with proper packaging, the audio-only face of MP4.

M4A questions, answered

How do I open a .m4a file?

iTunes, Music.app, VLC, foobar2000, phones and modern browsers all play it. dexrr plays and converts m4a files directly in your browser.

Can I convert M4A files online?

Yes, dexrr converts m4a locally in your browser: M4A to MP3 for compatibility, M4A to WAV for editing or M4A to FLAC when the source is lossless.

What is the difference between M4A and MP4?

Same container. .m4a is the audio-only variant, .mp4 carries video too. The extension just signals what is inside.

Is M4A better than MP3?

The AAC inside typically sounds better at equal bitrate, and the container supports proper chapters and metadata. MP3 still wins on universal playback.

Is the M4A format outdated?

No, it is the standard audio container of the Apple ecosystem and a common podcast and voice-memo format.
