AAC file format: what it is and how to use it
AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) is the MPEG codec that quietly replaced MP3 in streaming, broadcasting and Apple's ecosystem: better quality per bit, everywhere. Learn when to use it and what to choose instead.

What is a AAC file?
An .aac file holds audio compressed with Advanced Audio Coding, the MPEG-2/MPEG-4 codec standardized in 1997 as MP3's designated successor. At the same bitrate it sounds measurably better, with better stereo handling and more efficient tools, which is why YouTube, Apple Music, DAB+ radio and Bluetooth all standardized on it. A bare .aac is usually an ADTS stream: playable everywhere but thin on metadata compared to .m4a.
When should you use AAC?
- Distribution audio: the best-supported lossy codec after MP3, with better sound per bit.
- Video soundtracks: AAC is the default audio track inside MP4, M4V and streaming.
- Voice and music at low bitrate: it holds up well where MP3 starts to warble.
When is another format a better fit?
For real-time chat and the lowest latency, Opus is technically superior. For archiving use FLAC or ALAC, since AAC is lossy. For tagged releases prefer .m4a, which wraps the same audio in a proper container, and when the target device is ancient, MP3 remains the floor.
The short version: AAC is the modern default for lossy audio, better than MP3 at the same size and wrapped properly as .m4a when you need metadata.

AAC questions, answered
How do I open a .aac file?
Every OS, phone, browser and player handles AAC natively, including bare .aac streams. dexrr plays and converts aac files directly in your browser.
Can I convert AAC files online?
Yes, dexrr converts aac locally in your browser: AAC to MP3 for compatibility, AAC to WAV for editing or AAC to FLAC when a lossless master exists.
Is AAC better than MP3?
At equal bitrates, yes. It was designed as the successor and is measurably more efficient. MP3 still wins on universal playback, not on quality.
What is the difference between .aac and .m4a?
The audio inside is often identical AAC. .m4a wraps it in an MPEG-4 container with tags, artwork and chapters; bare .aac is just the raw stream.
Is the AAC format outdated?
No, it remains the dominant lossy codec in streaming, broadcasting and mobile audio, and the default track of the MP4 ecosystem.
