What is a VORBIS file?
A .vorbis file is audio compressed with Vorbis, the Xiph.Org open lossy codec that gave the world a patent-free MP3-class alternative, typically inside an Ogg container (which is why you more often see .ogg). It powered game soundtracks, Wikipedia's audio and open-source media for two decades, until Opus arrived to beat it at its own game.
When should you use VORBIS?
- Reading game and open-media libraries: countless titles still ship .ogg Vorbis.
- Patent-free pipelines: where licensing must be avoided entirely.
- Reasonable mid-bitrate audio: solid quality where Opus is not required.
When is another format a better fit?
For new encodes use Opus, objectively better at every bitrate with the same openness. For universal playback MP3 or AAC; for lossless FLAC. Vorbis is the middle chapter of open audio's story.
The short version: VORBIS is the open codec that bridged MP3 and Opus. Still fine to read, but Opus is what to write.

VORBIS questions, answered
How do I open a .vorbis file?
VLC, foobar2000 and most players decode it, usually named .ogg. dexrr plays and converts vorbis files directly in your browser.
Can I convert Vorbis files online?
Yes, dexrr converts vorbis/ogg locally in your browser: Vorbis to MP3 for playback or Vorbis to WAV for editing.
Is Vorbis better than MP3?
At equal bitrate it usually edges MP3, and it is patent-free. MP3 still wins on device compatibility.
What is the difference between .vorbis and .ogg?
Vorbis is the codec; Ogg is the container it lives in. A .ogg file usually contains Vorbis (or Opus) audio, so the extensions overlap in practice.
Is the Vorbis format outdated?
Effectively yes, Opus is its superior successor, though its installed base in games and archives keeps it relevant.
