What is a MESHY file?

A .meshy file is a 3D model downloaded from Meshy.ai, the AI-powered 3D asset generator. Under the MESHY.AI magic bytes it is not a new format at all: the payload is an ordinary binary glTF (.glb) whose first block is AES-encrypted, so only tools that know the container can read it. Unwrap it once and you get a normal glTF scene with meshes, PBR materials and textures.

When should you use MESHY?

  • Fresh out of Meshy.ai: if the platform handed you this file, this is its native delivery shape.
  • Archiving the original download: keeping the untouched export is reasonable for provenance.

When is another format a better fit?

Almost everywhere. GLB is the same model without the encryption, readable by every 3D tool, engine and viewer. For printing use STL or 3MF; for a bare mesh, OBJ.

The short version: MESHY is a GLB in an encrypted envelope. Unwrap it to .glb and it works everywhere.

How do I open a .meshy file?
