What is a ASS file?
An .ass file is a subtitle script in Advanced SubStation Alpha, the styled successor to SSA from the late 1990s. Beyond cue text and timings it defines named styles (font, size, colors, borders, shadows), per-line positioning and rotation, and time-coded karaoke/fx tags: a subtitle as a designed overlay, not just captions.
When should you use ASS?
- Fansub-grade styling: signs, typesetting and karaoke that follow the video's look.
- Precise placement: multiple regions, rotations and effects per cue.
- Archival of designed tracks: keeps every styling decision editable as text.
When is another format a better fit?
For plain captions that must play everywhere, SRT is the universal floor. For web video use WebVTT, HTML5's native track format with a fraction of the styling power. And SSA matters only for legacy files: ASS is its superset.
