What is a VTT file?

A .vtt file is subtitles in WebVTT, the W3C's web-native caption format: a WEBVTT header then cues with dot-decimal timings, plus optional cue settings (position, alignment, size), regions, and CSS-::cue styling hooks. It is the only subtitle format the <track> element natively understands, accessibility infrastructure, not just captions.

When should you use VTT?

  • HTML5 video: the required format for <track> captions and subtitles.
  • Styled-enough captions: positioning and styling without ASS's weight.
  • Chapters and metadata: its cue types go beyond plain subtitles.

When is another format a better fit?

For universal player compatibility, SRT still loads everywhere including ancient software. For full design control, meaning typesetting, karaoke and signs, ASS is the artist's format. VTT is the web's lane.

The short version: VTT is the subtitle format browsers speak, the required choice for HTML5 video.

VTT questions, answered

How do I open a .vtt file?

Any text editor; browsers render it via <track> on a video element; players like VLC read it too. dexrr displays and converts vtt files in your browser.

Can I convert VTT files online?

Yes, dexrr converts vtt locally in your browser: VTT to SRT for universal players or VTT to ASS for styling.

Is VTT better than SRT?

For the web, yes, it is the HTML5 standard with positioning and styling. For universal compatibility beyond browsers, SRT still loads in more players.

Why does my VTT not show in the browser?

Check the WEBVTT header, dot-decimal timestamps (not commas), and that the <track> has kind="captions" plus a valid src.

Is the VTT format outdated?

No, it is the current web caption standard, required by the HTML5 video API.
