What is a SRT file?

An .srt file is subtitles in SubRip format, the plain-text standard: a cue number, a HH:MM:SS,mmm --> HH:MM:SS,mmm timing line, the text, a blank line. Nothing else: no styling, no positioning, no metadata. That radical simplicity is why every player, editor, platform and device on the planet understands it.

When should you use SRT?

When is another format a better fit?

How do I open a .srt file?
