What is a SSA file?

An .ssa file is a subtitle script in SubStation Alpha, the mid-90s format that introduced styled subtitles: named styles with fonts and colors, dialogue events with timings, and basic positioning. It is the direct predecessor of ASS, which extended it with the effects and control that made styled subtitling an art.

When should you use SSA?

  • Reading old fansubs: archives from the era still ship .ssa tracks.
  • Basic styled subtitles: simple font and color control without full ASS complexity.
  • Conversion input: it upgrades cleanly to ASS or downgrades to SRT.

When is another format a better fit?

For styled work use ASS, the strict successor with more power. For plain captions use SRT; for web video VTT. SSA survives as a read-only legacy.
